Von Krahl Theatre, the first private theatre of Estonia’s re-independence era, was founded in 1992. However, the origins of the theatre reach further back in time and are closely connected with its central figure, Peeter Jalakas.

Von Krahl Theatre is often referred to as Estonia’s first private theatre, although this is not entirely accurate. In 1923, the Estonian actor, director, and theatre manager Paul Pinna founded the Rahvateater (People’s Theatre), which also operated as a private theatre.

If one attempts to characterise the artistic work of Von Krahl Theatre, two main directions can be identified throughout its history. The first is a laboratory-like inward orientation focused on developing and refining distinctive theatrical and acting techniques. The second consists of administrative and organisational activity, through which productions have been brought before audiences, international relations have been cultivated, and festivals have been organised.

The artistic ambition of the theatre has been to remain different — a theatre open to experimentation. This fundamental principle has remained unchanged over the years, while the institutional structure has evolved and the artistic level has become increasingly professional.

Von Krahl Theatre was preceded by VAT Theatre and a troupe known as Ruto Killakund. The years 1992–1994 were marked by a bold and turbulent beginning in the building on Rataskaevu Street. The period 1994–1998, often described as years of uncertainty, functioned as a time of experimentation and a springboard toward the next intensive phase with a permanent ensemble between 1998 and 2003.

From 2003 onward, Von Krahl Theatre entered a period of expanding activity, and the Von Krahl Academy was established — a new initiative within the Estonian cultural landscape at the time.
