Lonely west (Kuressaare theatre)
Martin McDonagh’s texts have been gracing Estonian theatre stages for 25 years, with his play "Üksildane lääs" (The Lonely West) premiering at Rakvere Theatre on October 1, 1999. Since then, McDonagh has become one of the most performed young playwrights in nearly every Estonian theatre.
McDonagh's trilogy, which began with the stunning arrival of his work on world stages in 1996, includes "The Beauty Queen of Leenane", "A Skull in Connemara", and "The Lonely West". These plays share a common setting: the small village of Leenane on the west coast of Ireland, in Galway County (Connemara).
In "The Lonely West", the character Welsh describes Leenane as: "When I first came here, I thought Leenane was a nice place. Turns out, it’s the Mecca of European murderers."
The play explores intense, conflicting emotions: What happens when you love someone so deeply, but don't know how to deal with those feelings? What if you care for your brother, yet hate him so much that you only wish to kill him? And what happens when the person who is supposed to guide others in matters of love and hate decides to leave?
The play’s sharp dialogue, laced with black humor, and its unexpected twists are why this story continues to be staged and beloved by audiences.

The play will run for approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes, in two acts.
The premiere will be held on March 7, 2024, at the Kuressaare Theatre's main hall.
