Antigone (Theatre Vanemuine)
The "Antigone" myth, one of Europe's most well-known cultural tales, tells the story of two brothers, Eteocles and Polyneices, who face each other in battle over the throne of Thebes, both meeting tragic deaths. King Creon honors Eteocles, who fought for the city's side, by granting him a proper burial, but orders that Polyneices, who fought for the opposing side, be left unburied. Antigone, their sister, refuses to accept this decision and performs a symbolic burial ritual for Polyneices. This sets the stage for a profound worldview conflict, where divine, human, national, and symbolic values collide.
The "Antigone" myth has been brought to the stage many times in Estonia, but for the first time, the text of Sophocles, one of ancient Greece’s most famous playwrights, will be presented in a fresh translation by Anne Lill.
