Von Krahl Theatre, the first private theatre of Estonia’s re-independence era, was founded by Peeter Jalakas in 1992. Throughout the 1990s and early 2000s, the theatre developed a distinctive contemporary postmodern stage language, becoming one of the most consistent and influential innovators in the Estonian performing arts landscape. Von Krahl’s work has been defined by the synthesis of different art forms and media, an author-driven approach to material, and a strong social awareness.

In 1998, a permanent ensemble was formed in the theatre’s legendary Old Town venue. Working with directors from Estonia and abroad, the troupe created productions marked by diverse aesthetics and performance styles, gaining international recognition from Helsinki to New York. Key ensemble members included Tiina Tauraite, Liina Vahtrik, Mari Abel, Juhan Ulfsak, Taavi Eelmaa, and Erki Laur.

During the 2010s, the theatre underwent several artistic and structural renewals. Since 2024, Von Krahl Theatre has been led by Juhan Ulfsak and Jaak Prints, and once again operates with a permanent ensemble: Liisa Saaremäel, Kristina Preimann, Kristel Zimmer, Edgar Vunš, Karl Birnbaum, Markus Andreas Auling, and Herman Pihlak.
